GiraffaSeat: Giraffe inspired Chair & footstool

To me one of the most interesting parts of refurbishing old furniture is
the history that comes along with it. As I re-do some of this older furniture I consider that.
This chair that I received from a friend clearly had some history. As I started gutting the
chair a few things stood out to me: the high quality and durability of the older furniture was
impeccable. So, I didn’t sand the imperfections down to a smooth finish. I don’t believe
in perfection and the same goes for all things re-done. There are still “wound marks”
from the life of the chair. Whether it's for a conversation piece or just the history this chair has so much to offer

Beautifully designed and built

I literally had to gut this WHOLE chair to get a new modern look. I went all the way down to the bare bones! Layer after layer I was tugging and ripping to get all the way down to the wood. Yanking at fabric, stuffing, staples and nails! When everything was finally removed(phewwww) I gave the chair a light sanding and then I painted the pieces I suspected would be exposed. I figured this would be the easiest time to do so. Then there were LOTS and I mean LOTS of measuring! Measured the chair, measured the fabric, back to the chair, back to the fabric... again, again, and again!

I tried a few different layouts for the fabric. Draped it over this way then that way. Folded here and tucked there. Finally I found something that I liked. I had to put the stuffing back in place and added some of my own to get the flat back I wanted.  After hours of ripping out all the staples and nails it was now time to add some back in. Many hours later after folding here, stapling there I finally finished.

SHABBY CHIC VINTAGE CHAIR

Sanding, sanding, and more sanding!! Layers later.... I was able to start the first NEW layer of paint! I was inspired by the fabric chosen and began with an Apple Green as the base color. and for the top coat I chose a Smokey Blue. I distressed the chair using sandpaper and some steel wool. The cushion was added for comfort and finally the chair was completed with two layers of Poly!

TEATIME TABLE

One sugar or two...

So this table is one of those projects that turn out to be more difficult than they look. I didn’t expect it to take as much time as it did but I did want it to turn out just right. So the base of the table was sanded down vigorously several times. I originally was going to paint it an exotic color but after sanding it and then wiping it down I saw the layers of paint that were hidden underneath the top coat. I really liked the look it gave the table so I worked with it. The top was sanded down several times as well as repainted. I needed to add something to accentuate the table so I added an accent color. I wanted to choose a color that would define the unusual shape of the table. This was probably the most difficult part of this project! I tried several different colors, wiping them off before they dried until I found one that worked. The seafoam green was the winner for several reasons. It didn’t take away from the different shades of yellow displayed but played off of it adding character.

This well crafted footstool wasn't really in bad shape at all. BUT.... I LIKE COLOR and I really wanted to match it to the zebra chair I completed before this. I felt the two went really well together (and they did since they sold as a pair!) I am usually able to just sand away but for this piece I had a very rough top coat to get through. There are severl different forms of strippers (and I am speaking of the paint removers..) out there so follow the directions on the container. The gyst... lay it on .. let it set .. scrape/wipe it off. This isn't my favorite part what so ever! ((sighhhh))

But it is totally worth it since the outcome makes me smile from ear to ear for days (or until it's sold).

ZEBRA PRINT ARMCHAIR

Have a seat ...

After spending quite some time reupholstering an entire camper I moved to a much smaller project! This chair was in such bad shape it was given to me ... instead of getting thrown in the trash! I Love giving life to old thngs! It needed to be completely refurbished from the inside out! I have this thing with animal prints (fake of course!) This chair will be the first piece done on the animal prints line I plan on doing.
